Abstract
This study examines the use of experience sampling techniques to measure daily experiences with the police and variations in attitudes towards them. Over 21 days, 206 young people in the Netherlands completed 3042 daily questionnaires. Observing police on the job or in the media were the most common experiences, and attitudes towards the police were generally stable. Most respondents, however, were barely exposed to any meaningful policing activities in the first place. The paper discusses the limitations that experience sampling has in studying the role of daily police encounters in shaping attitudes.
